un week-end all'aria aperta- a week-end in the open

A very pleasant week-end in springtime weather, out in the warm air and sun. Saturday, groupsketching at Elisabetta Mitrovic's, where I painted the artichoke plants in her vegetable garden, and the beech forest not far from her home.

I thought Sumi-e for the task of rendering the spiky leaves without putting in too much detail, and I'm happy with the result.

As for the beech forest, I was interested in rendering the textures that the soft warm sun made shimmerwith colours and shades. I hadn't much time so I finished it at home tonight.

Today I visited my cousin Maddalena who lives south of Rome in former countryside. Her love forbrough her to make a pond in the large garden, which is brimming with life. I chose at random a spot and strived to render the difficult values, reflections and submerged colours.

Primavera- Spring

Yesterday I saw the first swift and the first swallow of the year. It was a sunny and windy day and I got myself drunk with fresh air, at the Lake of Bracciano. Be welcome, Spring, and try to bring some peace in our hearts, despite the horrors of war, of the dead, of violence.

Another exciting roman encounter, in the slice of sky visible from my garden. Back from walking my dog Amélie this morning, I was outside cleaning her paws, when the familiar cry of herring gulls (regularly breeding in town since a decade or so) was suddenly accompanied by the song of cranes! I ran and grabbed my binoculars -I couldn't believe my eyes- and the V-shaped formation, heading north, glided past the profiles of buildings. Have a safe migration!
I made the watercolour only tonight and I'm not very happy with it, it looks rather rigid, but I really wanted to share this vision with my friends. (The other birds in flight are supposed to be herring gulls, passerines, and the perched one is a hooded crow. There is a flag on the balcony on the right, since today is 150 years from the Unification of Italy.).

In Italy chrisantemums are the flowers for the dead, since they bloom in autumn, in coincidence with the festivity of Ognissanti, traditionally the day when everybody visits their dead at the cemetery. Today I had my second lesson of Sumi-e and these flowers were the model, being one of the themes in Japanese painting.
I feel like dedicating these miserable attempts to the Japanese dead, brushed away by a sob of our planet.

Pettazzurro a Roma! Bluethroat in Rome!

Schizzi veloci e incompleti, purtroppo.

Pettazzurro- bluethroat- Luscinia svecica

Someone must have been thinking I'm getting lazy, having posted nothing for a while. Actually, my life has been complicated by my mother, fracturing her right arm, and my commissions that I try to fit in with the rest.
The amazing news is that a bluethroat has been observed and later identified in my sister's garden, not a mile from mine, in full Rome town, while pecking in a flower-pot.
I don't know what I'd give to have such a splendour in MY  garden...but I presume that this migrant has already left heading north.
It gives me the opportuniy to post these sketches made in a bird-ringing station called La Tomina, years ago. This individual was a male in partial moult, so not too colourful, hand-held by a ringer. Very quick and never completed sketches, as usual, alas.
