Today I went to see the Giorgia O'Keeffe exhibition, one of the many interesting ones in Rome these days. I came out having met a great artist, an important, independent, and refined painter.
I admit I only knew her through the stereotype of "the large flower painter".
I learnt a lot from each picture, even those I didn't particularly like. What really conquered me is her freedom, something without which an artist is only half himself. Go see it if you can:http://www.fondazioneromamuseo.it/
and I wish you all a 2012 full of beauty, nature and hope.

Auguri! Best wishes!

A few years ago, spending some time at the Paneveggio Park in the Alps in june,  I drew, on grey paper using a fine tip pen, the imposing root of a larch, part of its lower branches, and the housekeeper: a male chaffinch, whose song I learnt by heart, even I who have a poor memory!
The hours  spent, sitting on the grass, were under the spell of the intricate pattern of branches and bark, and mesmerized by the looping tiri-tiri-tiri-chiùchiùchiù of the bird. Moreover, I kept asking myself if it wasn't a stroke of madness to tackle such a graphic quest.
I sold the drawing and somewhat forgot about it, when a print proof emerged while tidying up, and I thought: here's this year's card!
Greetings are sung by the chaffinch....

Le mostre sono finite... the exhibitions are over...

Today I've brought home the Birdland exhibition. My study is in utter chaos, I still have to clean up the palettes I used for Terre d'Africa (!) and I still am longing to paint more Africa, more birds, and better still... I was discussing with Fabio about the outcome of these exhibitions. He reproaches me for being somewhat disappointed, and claims that considering this period of crisis, they went really well. It's true that I sold some pictures and received many heartfelt congratulations. It's true thast I feel I've grown, having experimented successfully new techniques, in order to convey my feelings in the best of ways. And maybe there will be further developments and new projects. But it's also true that I'd have been truly happy if all those who had promised to come had shown up, just to see what I'd been painting.
I keep to myself the reason why I see the glass half empty, bu I'm determined to go ahead, because painting is great!

Birdland
