NAMIBIA PARTE 4- ETOSHA, the water holes

We enter the legendary Etosha Park between columns of bushfire smoke. Hardly an animal in sight, until we reach Okakuejo Lodge with its waterhole close to our rooms. The feast begins! Loads of zebras, springbock, some oryx, jackals,herons...such a breathtaking, lively beautiful scene...and then enter The Elephants, at first just two, then other six. It's exciting to see them so close, only a dozen of metres away, such massive personalities as well as bodies, but weird to witness wilderness  sitting confortably as in a theatre.
Later, in the lit-up night, a couple of black rhinos- mother and young- come to the pool to drink. Wary of our whispers, shy and endearing, they leave as soon as they've drunk, with their long, springy step. A lone one will come much later, and, disturbed by the elephant's presence, comes huffing very close to where I'm sitting.

We move on next day to the central Resort, Halali ; the beautiful rocky waterhole is empty, so  I start drawing a Phantom tree with its stark white bark, rooted amidst black, rough rocks.

Then a few kudus come and leave, before the waterhole is crammed by 16 elephants, adults and babies..my camera is flat, so after watching and  loving the scene, I grab my watercolour pencils and sketch the scene as if hypnotized. Although they moved all the time, I seem to have got nearly all the family on the page.
Later another rhyno with its young come by: the evening is lovely, the water ultramarine blue, reflecting the sky...

Here end my Namibian sketches. You can't sketch when shut in a car with other people! But I have taken plenty of pictures in my encounters with lions, giraffes, gnus, cheetas, and will use them to make some more consistent works.
But drawing and taking pictures are actions that create a filter between you subject and yourself. The best moments I enjoyed have been the very few when I could just look, absorb, take part intensely.

Happy holidays to my  readers!
