NAMIBIA parte 2- la costa e le otarie. The coast and the seals

After the marvellous red dunes of the Namib, we proceed through  other kinds of desert. After Solitaire, heading north we pass through a fascinating terrain covered in golden dry grass, extending for miles and enriched by the erosions and riverbeds that animate its shapes; and the desolate, flat, rocky desert bordering the Atlantic coast. Hundreds of kilometers of nothing but some areas of red lichens that light up the grey scene under an overcast sky, and the clumps of a plant that manages to grow thanks to the mist that comes from the sea. No trace of life in this inferno, lined by crosses for those who have died in absurd accidents, on a straight and wide road with no traffic. This lanscape makes our hearts sink.

And then we meet the shak of a tyre service, some salt digs, and lining the road, funny little tables offering salt crystals, a tin for the  money, and nobody around...

Our aim is the colony of Cape seals in Cape Cross, counting around 20,000 individuals. You actually walk through it and only a metre above them. At last I can sketch some animals, and so close that I can see every little detail of them! I stop to enjoy listening to their complex calls, looking at their life made of sleep, squabbling, cuddling, and swimming... so lovely!

We leave the desolate coast heading towards Etosha Park. But before that we'll stop for the night at the Gelbingen Lodge, where a Himba village has settled. I cant wait to draw this very interesting ethnic group.

Namibia-parte 1: il deserto del Namib. The Namib desert.

I take notes on Dune 45.

Here I am, back from my Namibian experience. All went well, though I couldn't draw much, due to the heavy schedule. We started from Windhoek, the capital city, towards the south-west, reaching the Sossusvlei Lodge after crossing dry savannah and passing mountains of different geological formations. It is the dry season, so riverbeds and grasses are dry and many trees are bare. The sun sets at 5,30, and after sunset all heat and light are gone.I have started by posting some pictures and drawings from the Namib desert, out first stop (3 nights in one lodge, the longest stay of all...). It's a very special environment, with the red sand dunes growing out of the sea of grass made of silver-grass,  beautiful, fine and soft of an undefined colour  close to Naples yellow. We drove in the Park for miles to reach the Deadvlei, a haunted area filled with dead tree trunks stuck in a white-caked plane, and the Sossusvlei, a small lake of brakish water where large acacia trees grow.
The colours were absolutely lovely with the blue mountains and purple shades against the different pinks, oranges and reds of the dunes, at different times of day and exposure to the sun rays. Here are a few pastels and watercolours I did one afternoon, when I could stop to draw...The fauna was rich in sprinbocks, oryx, ostriches, birds of prey and bustards. All new to me and fascinating!

L'importante è partecipare...You win or lose...

(sotto "Notizie" e "Comunicazioni"/loghi in concorso)

Some time ago I'd sent in this logo for a competition , for the initiative "M'ammalia-The Mammal week"(the latin name is split by a hyphen so that in Italian it also means: it tantalizes me. Its not my idea and it's very witty).
I enjoyed playing with letters and images, and couln't help inserting the element that unifies all mammals...
After a long wait I got the response, rather humiliating: I scored 13th out of 15. Maybe I'm not a great designer, but I thought the idea was simple but cheeky and could draw attention to the event.
Too bad. In 4 days I'll be in Namibia and will forget about it...

Preparandomi al Viaggio...Preparing for The trip...

Grazie!

Hardly more than a week before leaving, I wanted to explain why I haven't been posting (or painting) much lately. I'm closing a project for a picture book to be sent to a competition, and getting ready for the Trip of my life: Namibia!
My first time in Africa, in black Africa: it's a craving I've been feeling deeply for a lifetime, and I finally grabbed the opportunity to join a group of friends, naturalists and another artist too (there will be two of us to hold up the rest...) I'm SO excited!
Thanks to my precious husband who financed me, I will be leaving on the 16th for an itinerary of 3 flights from Rome/Frankfurt/Johannesburg/Windhoek, nearly 24 hours spent between airports and flights.
We will be driving through the north-western part of the country,  including the desert, the coast, and Etosha Park naturally.
I'm afraid I won't be able to render the visions I'll witness, and that the excitement will paralyze my hand...I haven't yet decided exactly what art materials I should bring. I rely on my new camera...
Have you been there? I'm looking for advice! Thanks!

Mostra annuale soci dell'AIPAN
Dal 2 (inaugurazione ore 18) al 10 luglio 2011.
Hotel Castello, Piazza Battaglione Alpini, L'Aquila.
Sempre aperto.

Nature always finds a way to regenerate itself, provided it gets the slightest opportunity.
It is adaptable, it evolves, it follows climate and seasonal changes.
L'Aquila is going through a long, hostile and uncertain season.
We bring to its inhabitants a sample of nature, a little of its beauty, strength and perseverance.
In this exhibition, our commitment as nature artists of the Italian Society for Nature Art AIPAN goes hand in hand with that of sketchers with the Carriola di disegni.
If you can, come and visit us.

Annual exhibition of the AIPAN Society
Opening July 2, 6pm, ending July 10.

L'attesa de L'Aquila- L'Aquila is looking on

Favolosi.

Significati paralleli: l'aquila attende...L'Aquila attende.

L'attesa-tecnica mista su carta, cm. 50x70.  The wait, mixed media on paper.

L'Aquila is the town where the Italian Society of Nature art is going to hold the annual exhibit in July.
It is also the town hit by the  2009 earthquake and that is still waiting to be recontructed. L'aquila, finally, means "the eagle" in Italian.
There are several reasons why I meant to dedicate a picture to the town and its symbol. One is in the banner here on the right, the Carriola di disegni blog, to whom I take part. Another is that I'm a sentimental person, thinking that art can convey more than just a good reproduction of the visible.

"The wait" is born as a study, on spolvero paper, testing hydrosoluble pastels mixed with dry gesso pastels and charcoal. I love being able to do and undo, put on and erase until the cocktail feels right.

I meant to convey a sense of suspended atmosphere. The eagle looks on towards a remote town, up in the mountains. It isn't defined but left open, like a concept. Its wings are folded and the eye is severe and alert. There is a strong contrast between the dark rock that supports it and the  hazy, luminescent atmosphere beyond.

The original model was taken from the Oxford Museum of Natural History, the Pitt Rivers.

Parallel meanings: the eagle is waiting..L'Aquila is waiting.
